    By Paul Viluda

    The word “calligraphy” is derived from two Greek words, denoting “beautiful writing”. Calligraphy or the art of writing has thousands of years in its history and development, and indeed calligraphy fonts, which we often use these days on our PCs to create a postcard or a wedding invitation card, are absolutely about aesthetics, refinement, creativity, and pure beauty.

    Title in 10 Free Beautiful Calligraphic Fonts

    Below is the selection of a dozen of calligraphy free fonts, you can easily download from the Internet and use for your own uniquely beautiful projects.

    Young Love ES

    Young-love-es in 10 Free Beautiful Calligraphic Fonts

    Fine, tender, and delicate, this Young Love ES calligraphy free font is the demonstration of calligraphy in its traditional meaning. The font has vivid features of a handwriting script, so it will suit perfectly for personal messages, invitations, or greetings. Besides, it can be used for some art logo designs. The font is supplied with the impressive set of character maps supported, thus making this free font a very flexible tool, allowing the use of multiple specific language characters and symbols.

    The King & Queen

    The-king-and-queen in 10 Free Beautiful Calligraphic Fonts

    The King & Queen is another Calligraphy font, available for free download online. This font has some traces of gothic or alternative style due to its grungy background. Besides, font designer used different line widths, which makes the font look more “manual” or “hand-written”. Some thorny lines and edges add specific chic to this free Calligraphy font; so, it is definitely recommended for designers, who like to experiment with fonts and are not afraid of mixing classic design with alternative shades.

    Cygnet

    Cygnet in 10 Free Beautiful Calligraphic Fonts

    Clear, reserved, and appropriate – I would use those adjectives to describe Cygnet calligraphy font, which is also available for free download. The font looks pretty rounded but without those fancy curls, as we can see in other calligraphy fonts. Both lowercase and upper Roman characters are included in the Cygnet character map. Besides, it also contains a vast variety of additional characters, allowing the use of this font in alphabets with accented letters.

    Liberate Wide Normal

    Liberate-wide-normal in 10 Free Beautiful Calligraphic Fonts

    Designed by Bay Animation Inc., this script font features medium weight and expanded proportion. The font is supplied with different character maps to suit the needs of the most exacting designers, who want to use some peculiar characters and signs. Along with the Basic Latin character map, you will also receive Latin Supplement, Latin Extended, General Punctuation, and even Letterlike Symbols in one box.

    ChopinScript

    Chopinscript in 10 Free Beautiful Calligraphic Fonts

    Chopin font is one of the most favorite free fonts in calligraphy category. It has already become a number one choice for many millions of designers, searching for a nice-looking, appealing, and neat calligraphy font. Uppercase letters look pretty fancy; however, this never prevents easy reading of a text; besides, the lowercase characters are designed in a traditional calligraphy manner. The font consists of 129 characters, including special symbols.

    CalligraphyFLF

    Calligraphyflf in 10 Free Beautiful Calligraphic Fonts

    With 227 characters included in the character map, Calligraphy FLF free font is a very good option for those creative applications, where strict and reserved calligraphy is expected. No fancy curls, all the attention is paid to content rather than to form. I would say this free font has a definite English scent of punctuality, demureness, and reliability. Calligraphy FLF was designed by Richard A. Ware, one of the representatives of the old school of font designers.

    NK39pc_D

    Nk39pc D in 10 Free Beautiful Calligraphic Fonts

    Peculiarity of this free calligraphy font is that along with basic Latin characters, it also contains Cyrillic and Greek symbols, which makes it a great choice when working with the alphabets other than Roman A-Z alphabet. Besides, the font contains mathematical operators and punctuation marks. The font has a classic calligraphy look with Roman alphabet, though with Cyrillic letters it is really curly, which makes it resemble some hand-writing art. The only thing I noted is that this font looks pretty small in regard to the font size chosen, however this can hardly be a drawback of this very nice and professional calligraphy font, friendly to Cyrillic and Greek letters.

    Champignon

    Champignon in 10 Free Beautiful Calligraphic Fonts

    There are two variants of this free font as shown on the samples above. The classic Champignon looks very pretty and appropriate in terms of classic calligraphy principles. Champignon Alt Swash looks differently and creates the feeling of sprawling handwriting.

    Windsong

    Windsong in 10 Free Beautiful Calligraphic Fonts

    Windsong is another free calligraphy font, featuring clear and light design. Light as the wind and smooth as a classic song, this font by Bright Ideas represents a traditional handwriting calligraphy. Both uppercase and lowercase letters look very close to the letters from school books. Numbers, as well as punctuation marks, are also present in the character map (247 characters in total). The font is characterized as semi-light in weight and medium (normal) in width. Windsong will be a good choice for projects, where classic calligraphy with handwriting look is expected.

    Lainie Day

    Lainie-day in 10 Free Beautiful Calligraphic Fonts

    Lainie Day with its delicate shapes of characters (Roman alphabet only), classic, but not boring lines, is definitely a must have calligraphy font for every designer. It looks like a golden middle between strict and reserved traditional calligraphy and modern fancy handwriting with many twirlings. Again, using this font you will stay focused on the message expressed by letters, and not on the form of those letters. Anyway, Lainie Day just like any other calligraphy font is the combination of content and pure aesthetics.

    How to Search For, Hire, and Work With a Web-Developer How to Search For, Hire, and Work With a Web-Developer How to Search For, Hire, and Work With a Web-Developer

    The market for freelance web design is huge. Being able to design a beautiful site in Photoshop is one thing. Programming a website is a whole other story.

    So when clients come knocking at your door asking for web design services, what do you, the non-programmer but rockstar designer, tell them? “Sorry, I only design, I don’t code.” No! You take the job, and team up with an equally rockstar-esque programmer to develop the site that you design.

    Easy, right? Well… not exactly. In case you haven’t noticed, there are many (too many) “hack” programmers out there. They talk up their capabilities, techie background, and all powerful programming skills, but just can’t deliver the quality results your project and your client deserve. Finding the gem in the bunch can be a tough task.

    How to Search For, Hire, and Work With a Web-Developer

    Sub-contractors can often make or break a client project. It takes a high level of trust, communication, and organizational skills to make your working relationship a success. For designers, programming can quickly becoming a confusing mess of code and technical jargon. I aim to clear things for you in this article.

    As both a designer and a programmer, I have experience working in both ends of web development. Today, I’d like to help designers bridge the gap between the design side and programming side so that you can tap into the massive pool of web design clients. Here’s what we’ll cover:

    1. Searching for programmers: Where to look?
    2. Hiring the right programmer: Things to look out for.
    3. Working with a programmer: Tips for success.
    Searching for programmers: Where to look?

    There are tons of places to search for a programmer, many of which should already be familiar to you. Here’s my list of go-to resources with the preferred outlets listed first:

    1) Referrals from your trusted network.

    Before you hit the job boards, it’s best to reach out to your co-workers, friends, or anyone you trust within the web industry. Going with a trusted recommendation is always your best starting point – especially if the the recommendation comes from first-hand working experience with the programmer. Your trusted network can even extend into your social media ring on Twitter, LinkedIn or Facebook. Reach out to those you have conversed with and gained trust in.

    2) Recognized industry experts.

    If your budget allows for it, reach out to the most visible and trusted industry experts. The big "names". I’m talking about those who speak at conferences, author well-known books, or have popular blogs. Of course, these are not the only super-talented programmers you can hire (there are many lesser-known but equally rockstar web devs out there). But the “names” have earned their credibility with proven success and recognition.

    3) Job boards

    When you’ve exhausted all other channels, it’s time to hit the online job boards. There are lots to choose from. Here are some of best places to look:

    • FreelanceSwitch Job Board
      I like this one because it requires applicants to pay a low monthly fee. This helps to weed out the “hacks” from the reliable web workers.
    • Elance
      A popular job site for freelancers. You can read reviews and ratings for each worker, with a visible work history.
    • Odesk
      Similar features to Elance, plus a built in time tracking component. Odesk allows you view hours worked plus see screenshots of your worker’s activity. This one is good for smaller, hourly jobs.
    • Authentic Jobs
      Postings for both full-time and freelance positions. Great for larger jobs with higher budgets.
    • Sortfolio
      Here you can browse portfolios of designers, developers, and agencies.
    • Smashing Jobs
      Of course, you can post your job listing here on Smashing Magazine for massive exposure.

    How to Search For, Hire, and Work With a Web-Developer

    Hiring a programmer: Things to look out for

    Now that you’ve found a list of applicants, here’s what you should look out for when sifting through their responses:

    1) Referrals, References, and Portfolio (in that order)

    This is true when hiring anyone, really. Hiring a programmer based on a personal recommendation from someone you trust is always your best bet. If you don’t have a personal referral, ask your potential programmer for references (with current contact info) from past clients, and contact them.

    Portfolios are important too. Click through to the sites they’ve developed and review the functionality. Question them on what exactly their role was in building these sites. Sometimes programmers might have coded the front-end CSS but left the database interaction work to someone else, or vice versa. It’s important to know which core skill(s) are needed for your project and seek out this type of experience from a programmer.

    2) Communication skills

    This is among the most important qualities to look out for. A successful programmer must have the ability to communicate in clear terms all of the technical issues associated with your project. That means breaking down all of the intricacies, walking you through the processes, and detailing the problems and solutions associated with each process.

    They must also be good listeners and follow your instructions to a tee. Look for strong phone and email etiquette.

    In the end, the communication between you and your programmer will be what makes or breaks your project. A breakdown in communication can throw your project off track (and off budget). A strong working relationship will result in a happy client and future work for everyone involved.

    3) Specific expertise

    Not all programmers do the same thing. You want to find a programmer who specializes in the type of programming your project requires. If you’re designing an E-Commerce website, you should hire a programmer who has E-Commerce experience, not simply website experience in general.

    The key is to find a specialist. Beware of programmers who say they know a technology, but haven’t really worked with it. You’re better off going with someone who has a proven track record in a specific skill than hiring a “jack of all trades”.

    A programmer who keeps a public blog is always a big plus in my book. That’s a great way to read up on what they specialize in. It also shows they are passionate about their work and expertise.

    4) Availability

    You want to make sure your programmer is available, not only to do the work but for regular chats and progress updates. Nothing is worse than a programmer who disappears for days or weeks at a time. Most web workers use IM or Skype. It’s good to know that your programmer is signed in and available for email / IM on a regular basis.

    Question them on what else they have on their plate during the time frame of your project. Does your project require full-time availability (not shared among other projects) or is it small enough manage alongside other projects? These availability issues are important to clarify before starting work because you’ll have additional assurance that deadlines will be met.

    5) Price

    Obviously, staying within your budget for the project is important. However, focusing solely on the programmer’s price quote will not result in the best hire. You should consider all of the above criteria along with your project budget to determine the best match.

    It’s easy to choose the programmer with the lowest rate. But are they the right person for your specific task? With such a wide spectrum of price comparison in the programming field, there is no way to direclty relate price to results. Some programmers under charge and over deliver while others overprice themselves and turn out to be hacks. Once again, you must take all things into consideration when choosing the right programmer for your project.

    On the subject of price, most freelancers fall into two groups: Bill by the hour, or charge a flat fee. If they wish to bill you hourly, be sure to get an estimate of hours before beginning work. A good idea would be to set milestones for updates. For example, a progress update and review when 10 hours have passed, and again at 30 hours.

    A flat fee may be preferable because you know exactly what the cost will be. In this case, be sure to clearly map out all of the deliverables to be covered under the agreement. That way there are no discrepancies when it comes time for settlement.

    Working with a programmer: Tips for success

    So you’ve hired a programmer and your project is underway. Here are some things to keep in mind to ensure your project goes smoothly:

    1) Articulate every detail

    Don’t assume the programmer knows what your goals are just by looking at the PSD. Take the time to discuss every functional detail, exactly how you envision it.

    What happens when the user clicks this button? What steps will the customer see as they proceed to checkout? What should happen when you roll the mouse over links? These are the types of questions that should be cleared up at the beginning of the project.

    It also helps to document the design notes, such as page and paragraph margins, line height, font choices, etc. A good programmer should match the details perfectly to the provided PSD, but don’t assume. It’s always better to be thorough in articulating the details.

    A fantastic tool for taking and marking up screenshots

    2) Provide web-ready designs

    Some designers don’t fully understand the structural constraints when designing for the web. The unit of measure on the web is pixels, and resolution is always 72 pixels per inch. If you provide a document at 300 pixels/inch resolution (as many print designers tend to do), it will be too large for the web browser.

    Most web programmers prefer to work from a Photoshop or Fireworks document. In Photoshop, when viewing your design at 72 pixels/inch and zoom set to 100%, the layout and proportions should appear exactly as you intend it to appear within the web browser.

    Photoshop-New-Doc in Designers: How to Search For, Hire, and Work With a Web-Developer

    Setting up a new document for the web in Photoshop

    It also helps to provide un-flattened documents. This way programmers can disable / enable layers when cutting all of the necessary images to construct the website. Also, if you need the text taken straight from the PSD, it’s best to easily cut and paste text rather than retype it.

    3) Check the website in all browsers

    This is what separates the pros from the Joes. Web programmers should be able to produce a functional website that displays correctly across all major web browsers. That list includes at least the following: Internet Explorer 7-8, Firefox 2-3, Safari 3-4, Google Chrome, and Opera. There’s a growing debate over whether or not Internet Explorer 6 should be included here. My take is that it depends on the project, and the browser statistics for the intended audience.

    Check the site in all of these browsers and click around to every page, action, and user process. Make sure all of the margins, graphics, and features display and function correctly. Confirm that the programmer will be available to troubleshoot any issues that (inevitably) arrive, both pre and post launch.

    4) Test and test again

    Checking all browsers for display issues is only part of the testing process. You need to test every piece of functionality as well. Of course, thorough testing should be part of the programmer’s responsibility. You should clarify exactly which testing standards are required for the project. After the programmer fulfills his testing responsibility, it’s up to you to go through and check everything yourself.

    Click every link to avoid any broken connections. Fill out and submit every form, with every combination of options to make sure the desired result happens. If it’s an E-Commerce website, purchase a test product using a real credit card. If it’s a blog or CMS, go in and create posts, edit content, and fully test the system that is in place. If you’re able to break something, you can be sure your client will be able to as well. Ironing out the bugs is a crucial part of every website development project.

    5) Set reasonable deadlines

    Nobody likes the added pressure of looming deadlines, especially when they’re set too tight. Deadlines create more stress and affect the overall quality of our work. That’s why it’s crucially important to set timelines that are reasonable and allow for ample room to work through the project.

    When managing a web design project, the timeline often involves several components:

    • The date you deliver designs to the programmer
    • The date the programmer delivers functionality back to you for review
    • A period of internal review and revisions between you and the programmer.
    • A period of review with the client.
    • Another round of revisions for you and the programmer.
    • Final delivery and website launch.

    When mapping out these milestone dates, it’s important to effectively manage the client’s expectations. You should first consult with the programmer to determine how long their end of the project will take. Only then should you relay the final timeline to the client. Always pad your time estimates to allow for flexibility. Inevitably there will be technical bugs to squash and unexpected hurdles to overcome. Anticipate these to make for a smooth final delivery to the client.

    Too often our project time lines are determined up front by the client, who often expect a turnaround time is too fast fully deliver on the requirements. Be sure to avoid this by setting milestone dates that are acceptable to everyone involved.

    Conclusion

    Once you hire a sub-contractor, you’re effectively taking on the role of project manager. This role involves additional skills beyond the realm of design. Communication is key. Learning to work collaboratively with a programmer will prove to be a valuable way to advance your career as a web designer. Along the way, you’ll learn all sorts of new skills and evolve your designs in ways you may never have envisioned before working on the web.

    In the end, hiring a programmer for your designs comes down to professionalism and teamwork. It takes time to seek out the right programmer and develop your working relationship. If you find a good fit, stick with it, nurture that relationship, and watch your web design business flourish.

    The ability to communicate, and communicate well, is one of the biggest factors in business success. You could be an excellent designer, but if you’re unable to promote your services and communicate effectively with clients and colleagues, your potential is limited. The principal areas where communication is essential include:

    • Pitching potential clients,
    • Client meetings,
    • Customer service,
    • Face-to-face networking,
    • Marketing your business

    Pitching Potential Clients

    When you freelance or own a business, your livelihood depends on your ability to sell your services. You need to be able to convince prospects that you are the best person for the job, and the communication secrets in this article will help you do this successfully.

    Pitch-services in 12 Secrets Of Effective Business Communication
    Image by Mart1n.

    1. Ask the Right Questions

    Part of selling your services is being able to understand the client’s unique needs. You can do this only by asking questions that get to the heart of the challenges they are facing. Once you have a clear understanding of the problem that the client needs to solve, you can pitch your services as the best possible option for the client, outlining how you will meet their needs.

    For example, when I am contacted by a prospective client, I have them fill out a website requirements document that poses various questions to help me better understand what they are looking for in a website. Some of the questions I ask are:

    • Describe the nature of your business.
    • Who is your target audience?
    • What is the background on the project? (Is it brand new? Has it already begun?)
    • What are the goals and objectives of the project?
    • What is the timeline for the project?
    2. Communicate Professionally

    Your professionalism can win you contracts, and your communication skills add to the complete package. Take time to proofread all emails prior to sending; use a business email address with a proper signature; answer the phone professionally; and speak articulately and competently at all times.

    While my email signature has evolved over time, below is the general format I follow, which has worked well for me:

    Name
    Company | Website
    Email | Phone number

    Client Meetings

    Client meetings, even those that take place over the telephone, are an integral part of every successful business. Follow these tips to make your meetings as productive as possible.

    Client-meetings in 12 Secrets Of Effective Business Communication
    Image by murielle.

    3. Schedule and Prepare Thoroughly

    We’re all busy these days, so scheduling your meetings in advance ensures that you and your clients have an adequate amount of uninterrupted time to speak. Once your meeting is scheduled, take time to prepare an agenda that outlines focus points and sets a structure. Sharing the agenda for the meeting gives both you and the client an opportunity to fully prepare.

    Because you may not be using the same calendar or scheduling program as your client, confirming the date and time of your meetings in an email and sending a reminder and the agenda the day before is good practice. If you are unsure how to format an agenda, plenty of templates are available for free online.

    4. Speak, Pause, Listen

    When you have several topics to tackle, rushing through them to get all of your ideas out may be tempting. But this causes confusion and makes the client feel that their input is not important. Slow down, and remember that communication is a two-way street. Establish a give-and-take that allows both parties to have their say.

    One way to become a better listener is to limit or eliminate distractions during your conversations. That may mean closing your email client, turning off the television and closing the door to your office. By doing these small things, you ensure that the client has your full attention, and they will sense that, too.

    5. Follow Up in Writing

    While you may be taking notes during phone or in-person meetings, the other party might not be, so follow up after the meeting with a written message, giving an overview of the discussion to make sure you are both on the same page. Summarize what was agreed, repeat questions that were raised and outline the next steps and responsibilities for both parties.

    In addition to sending your notes, invite the other party to give their feedback on what you have sent. This way, it becomes a collaborative document and not just one person’s view.

    Customer Service

    Your clients want to feel that they are your priority. You can make them feel so by providing exemplary customer service. Try these communication-focused actions to improve your customer service.

    Customer-service in 12 Secrets Of Effective Business Communication
    Image by Oreckel.

    6. Ask for Feedback

    One way to maintain long-term relationships with your clients is by keeping open lines of communication. This means asking them for their input on how things are going and how they feel about the service you’re providing. This can be accomplished by inquiring at the end of a project, during day-to-day conversations or through formal surveys. The format matters less than the actual act of it, so work it into your business and fine tune as you go along.

    When conducting surveys, use an online service that tracks responses for you. There are several online services that should give you enough functionality to conduct client surveys. Here are a few worth checking out:

    7. Address Problems

    If a client is unhappy, don’t ignore their complaints. Ask them why they are unhappy and what you can do to fix the situation. The longer you wait to bring it up, the worse it will get. Addressing the issue and being accountable when appropriate puts you on the path to resolution. And your willingness to face the problem head-on tells the client that you care about the project and their satisfaction.

    If a client complains about your turnaround time or responsiveness, you may need to create a more formal project plan to clarify expectations. A working document like this can also eliminate some of the uncertainty regarding responsibilities and keep everyone on track.

    8. Try a New Format

    If a problem with your client stems from miscommunication, try a different method of communication. If you have been handling everything via email, schedule a phone call to see if that clears things up. After the call, you can summarize the conversation in an email to the client, which will give you another opportunity to get both of you on the same page again.

    Today, so much communication is done via email that the opportunity for major miscommunication is almost inevitable. A rule of thumb is to limit your email to one screen-full (i.e. above the fold); anything that requires more space than that should be handled by phone. This should help you avoid some of the pitfalls of relying on email alone.

    Face-to-Face Networking

    Networking events, conferences and other face-to-face opportunities can take your business to a new level. These tips focus on helping you get the most from in-person networking activities.

    9. Communicate Confidently

    Be confident and use body language to support that confidence. Shake hands firmly, smile and make eye contact while communicating at live networking events. Don’t forget to bring business cards to hand out to everyone you meet, and remember to relax and be yourself.

    Before heading out to a networking event, practice introducing yourself to new people to gain confidence. Working on your introduction with someone you trust and asking for their feedback also helps.

    10. Prepare an Elevator Speech

    An elevator speech helps you make the most of a first impression, while making networking situations easier and more productive. Be prepared with your speech and ready to answer common questions about your business and what you do. Practice your elevator speech ahead of time so that you are relaxed and comfortable with introducing yourself.

    Your elevator speech should last no longer than 30 seconds and should convey how your product or service solves a problem for your target audience. An elevator speech could go something like:

    Have you ever gotten completely lost on a website because the navigation was inconsistent, confusing and disorganized? What I do is redesign websites for small-business owners who need a stronger, more coherent online presence. By learning as much as I can about the company, I create a strategic plan for reinventing an existing website to be more functional and user-friendly.

    Marketing Your Services

    Whether you market your business online, in person or through traditional advertising, communication is key to brand awareness. Here are two secrets to magnify the impact of your marketing across the board.

    Writing in 12 Secrets Of Effective Business Communication
    Image by ralaenin.

    11. Be Responsive

    A big part of marketing is being available to your target audience and following up when necessary. If you market your business through social media outlets—including Twitter, Facebook and blogging—watch for and respond to comments, questions and especially complaints. And when you are contacted as a result of offline marketing activities, respond quickly and professionally.

    Plenty of recent examples on Twitter show how certain brands have been slow to respond to criticism, hoping it would die down, only to see it spin out of control. Also, when you do respond on social media websites, keep it professional, and avoid confrontation because that would only spread the fire.

    12. Write Well

    You can’t successfully promote your business if your marketing copy is not clear, concise and action-provoking. If writing is not your forte, consider hiring someone to help you craft copy that attracts potential clients, generates interest in your services and motivates potential clients to action.

    To strengthen your writing skills, start a swipe file of marketing copy that you like and have found inspirational. Read through it and make notes of what you like in particular and what pulls you in. By making this a frequent exercise, you should be able to learn what makes good copy good and bad copy bad.

    Your Turn to Weigh In

    Being a tolerable communicator and an effective communicator is the difference between being good and great at what you do. If your design skills are up to par with your competition’s, then strong communication skills can put you ahead. Strengthening your communication skills is worth the time and effort, and you may be surprised by how much you benefit from more polished and professional interaction.

    What do you think? What impact has communication had on your success? How have you improved your ability to communicate with clients and colleagues?

    By Louis Lazaris

    If you’ve been formally educated in marketing, more than likely you’ve learned about a marketing model called AIDA. AIDA is an acronym that represents the different steps involved in selling a product or service. Very often, the principles of AIDA are applied naturally when a useful product or service is being marketed. Being web designers and app developers, however, our personal involvement on a technical level in our own or client projects may deter our efforts to produce a design that correctly implements AIDA.

    I’ve only recently come to learn about the AIDA model myself, and I thought it would be an interesting topic to apply directly to the decisions we make in web design. In this article I’ll provide examples with some explanations showing how web and app developers can effectively implement this model for full benefit.

    A = Attention

    The first step in successfully marketing a product or service is getting attention, that is, getting potential consumers to notice your product. There are a couple of obvious ways this can be done.

    Attention Through Strong Imagery

    Web development trends have over the years improved to imitate print methods more closely — and for good reason. Principles in print design have been studied and tested for so many years, and have proven to be successful in so many industries. The use of strong imagery to market a product has always been a powerful way to get a potential customer’s attention.

    Apple’s marketing department understands the importance of imagery in getting someone’s attention, and they do this quite effectively on the Apple website, shown below.

    Ipad in The AIDA Marketing Model in Web Design

    The extra-large iPad images give the customer a clear picture of the relative size of this new device. Many readers who have browsed the Apple site before will have seen images of the iPhone or other smaller devices, so when they see the size of the iPad image, they’ll immediately understand that this is a larger device.

    Of course, not every product or service requires this type of differentiation in image size, but this is a good example of how images can be powerful tools for grabbing attention.

    Another excellent example of strong imagery is shown in the image below from Trendex Home, a company that sells tablecloths, placemats, and related items.

    Trendex in The AIDA Marketing Model in Web Design

    The image of the wine glass and the tablecloths can’t be missed, so it successfully gets the reader’s attention.

    Of course, both examples shown above do more than just grab attention, which will be discussed later.

    Attention Through Strong Typography

    Another well-known method of grabbing attention is the use of large headings, utilizing color and whitespace to maximize their effect.

    Lairdesign in The AIDA Marketing Model in Web Design

    The Lairdesign home page, shown above, makes effective use of strong typography, using a very curious-sounding phrase to grab the user’s attention. The sentence “…where even the colour of the tea is considered!” expresses something important about the company’s view of design, doing so distinctly and beautifully.

    Glenilen in The AIDA Marketing Model in Web Design

    Likewise, the Glenilen Farm site places part of their home page’s focus on the phrase “Why not try our delicious handmade cheesecakes”, which, along with the strong imagery, helps grab the hungry shopper’s attention.

    I = Interest

    The next step in the AIDA model is keeping the interest of the customer. In the previous section, we saw how aesthetic enhancements can be used to get the customer’s attention. But along with that, the customer needs to know how your product or service will help them. In this case, giving a list of features is not enough; you need to express to your users how those features will benefit them.

    Let’s consider again the iPad and Trendex Home websites to show how the imagery conveys important benefits that help to keep the customer’s interest.

    Interest Through Practical Benefits

    Whatever product you’re advertising will likely be something that helps the consumer in some way. Maybe it helps them save time, cut corners, save money, or provides a service that assists them to overcome menial, repetitive tasks. Whatever the benefit is, it needs to be communicated to the customer so they can see exactly how their life or workflow will be helped.

    Despite all the negative reviews and comments that have been made about Apple’s new iPad, the Apple marketing department has successfully marketed their new product to its target audience, which is not a tech-savvy audience, as some have incorrectly assumed.

    Ipad-2 in The AIDA Marketing Model in Web Design

    The iPad image on the right displays the New York Times website as the example, which is perfect for the audience that the iPad is geared towards. Nontech-savvy users who want to use a portable device for daily tasks while commuting will immediately see the benefit of the device, not only because of the landscape/portrait potential but for the size and apparent relative ease of carrying the device.

    Trendex-2 in The AIDA Marketing Model in Web Design

    Trendex Home likewise uses their imagery to demonstrate the practical benefits of one of their products. The spilled wine beads neatly on the tablecloth garment, indicating the high quality material used to manufacture their products. Thus, instead of saying “our products are made with high-quality materials”, they’re saying “here’s how our high-quality products help you”, which equates to features plus benefits, as opposed to features alone.

    D = Desire

    The next step in the AIDA model is desire, which is a natural extension of interest. After you’ve grabbed a consumer’s attention, and obtained their interest, you need to keep that interest going by promoting your product in such a way that they will begin to grow in their desire for it. This is probably the most difficult of any of the steps in the AIDA model, and can encompass a number of different techniques, but I’ll mention a few here that are geared specifically towards web designers.

    Desire Through Content Sliders

    JavaScript-driven content switchers and image sliders are extremely popular on home pages nowadays, and for good reason. They’re beautiful, accessible, they degrade gracefully, and they help market your products in a non-obtrusive and tasteful manner.

    Aesthetics and accessibility, however, should not be the only reasons for including such a feature. This method of displaying content should also be for the purpose of helping to build desire for your products or services. Again, I’ll refer to the Apple website and their marketing of the iPad. The large images we discussed earlier are part of an image switcher that slowly shows the different ways that the iPad is a benefit to its target audience.

    After displaying two iPads with content-heavy websites loaded, the next two images show the ease with which the iPad users can access and read email, along with the ability to view and save family photos.

    Ipad-3 in The AIDA Marketing Model in Web Design

    Ipad-4 in The AIDA Marketing Model in Web Design

    If the user has stuck around this long, they will be visually informed of the email- and photo-related features, helping to build their desire for the product.

    Desire Through Organization of Content

    Anyone involved in web development in recent years will likely be familiar with SitePoint and their top-quality articles and books on design and development. Each individual SitePoint book page is an excellent example of content that’s organized with the goal of building desire for the product.

    Sitepoint in The AIDA Marketing Model in Web Design

    Highlighted above are headings that introduce easy-to-read lists of features, customer testimonials, and SitePoint’s competitive pricing (although I personally find that the pricing is better through Amazon, so in this case their claims for the low price are not necessarily accurate).

    Similar to SitePoint’s book page, the WordPress hosting page on WPWebHost presents a clean list of features designed to build desire in the consumer.

    Wpwebhost in The AIDA Marketing Model in Web Design

    A = Action

    The final step in the AIDA marketing model is getting the user to take action. This is a step that, due to its importance, has been discussed numerous times here on Smashing Magazine and other design blogs, so I won’t go into great detail.

    After getting the user’s attention, arousing their interest, and stimulating their desire for your product, they need to have a clear way to take action. Whether it’s to sign up for your service, purchase your product, or download a trial of your app, the visual enticement to take action should be elegant, beautiful, and convenient.

    Any quality CSS Gallery today contains numerous examples of websites with home pages and product pages that utilize effectively-placed call-to-action buttons, so be sure to examine some of the patterns and trends used by top design firms when mapping the action processes that users take.

    Action Through CTAs

    Staple-cta in The AIDA Marketing Model in Web Design

    Bonus: S = Satisfaction

    Many people have favored adding a fifth letter to the AIDA acronym: “S” for “Satisfaction”. After a product has been correctly marketed through attention, interest, desire, and action, it is up to the product or service provider to maintain and support their products to keep the customers happy and satisfied long after purchase.

    Conclusion

    The techniques mentioned above, when isolated, are really nothing new in modern web design. Many experienced designers have implemented many, if not all, of these methods. This discussion has attempted to give purpose to some of the decisions we make in design, demonstrating that design should follow a close examination of content and marketing goals.

    Using the AIDA marketing model, you can give purpose and direction to all the design and architectural decisions made in your web design projects.

    Here is something for a slow lousy Sunday: in this inspirational round-up we feature some outstanding interactive installations that explore the art of interaction between environment, users and machines. Extraordinary artworks. Take a look at 15 beautiful examples of interactive installations: experiments, motions, applications and more.

    Night2-550x412 in 15 Amazing Interactive Installations

    Installations / Applications

    N Building
    N Building is a commercial structure located near Tachikawa station amidst a shopping district. Being a commercial building signs or billboards are typically attached to its facade which we feel undermines the structures’ identity. As a solution they thought to use a QR Code as the facade itself.

    Night Lights
    YesYesNo teamed up with The Church, Inside Out Productions and Electric Canvas to turn the Auckland Ferry Building into an interactive playground. Our job was to create an installation that would go beyond merely projection on buildings and allow viewers to become performers, by taking their body movements and amplifying them 5 stories tall.

    Light Writing Proposal
    This long exposure, and the making of footage, were shot over three nights in Raleigh, North Carolina as a proposal to Emily Kern. The words “Emily, will you marry me?” Were spelled out in light writing. The final image is made up of approximately 800 individual 10 second exposures.

    What you see is – not what you get
    Video production for a school assignment. The task was to create an ass-kick video that had something to do with how we, as in Deviners, eat or cook our food.

    Experience Mobile Mobile
    Built and hoisted a gigantic interactive chandelier/mobile that plays Christmas jingles in our reception. Mobile Mobile has been made as a semi-permanent hanging (exhibition) space. In January the mobiles will be replaced with another hanging media, then updated month in, month out.

    Crystal Smesh
    Ornamental and granulated light and media facade for the ILUMA Urban Entertainment Centre in Singapore.
    Video documentary of the first configuration and testing program in march 2009. Full project completion and inauguration scheduled for 12/2009.

    Zimoun Installation
    Zimoun: Sound Sculptures & Installations | Compilation Video

    Le Nuage
    The cloud is an atmospheric event occurred during the Nuit Blanche 2009 on the wall of the courtyard of 102 rue du Faubourg Poissonnière in Paris.

    Interactive MultiTouch Sphere
    Seeper is an arts and technology collective. Founded in 1998 seeper’s nucleus is the pursuit of essence. Exploring natural user interaction and ubiquitous computing to create multi-sensory experiences and memories. A veritable interactive MultiTouch Sphere.

    Sweatshoppe
    In an effort to establish new platforms for public art and performance, the multimedia duo SWEATSHOPPE has developed a new interactive technology that enables them to explore the relationship between video, mark making and architecture.

    Scattered Pixel
    Scattered Pixels is a new interactive installation volumetric collective Visual System. Presented by the theater the agora nationally Evry-Essonne.

    VS Ny Expo
    “Here is a first insight of our exhibition at FIAF galery in New York City. The artists who worked on this exhibition: Valère Terrier, Djeff Regottaz and Bastien Ribeiro. The exhibition was at the French Institute.”

    Digital Wallpaper
    Once in a while it is nice to not work on a commercial project and have the freedom of doing whatever you want. Fortunately the people at Büro Hirzberger were totally open to whatever we presented them to decorate parts of their office space in Vienna. This digital wallpaper, using 2 projectors to map an entire wall and using VVVV to do the deskewing and to generate the content.

    Nearness
    Nearness explores interacting without touching. One of the essential properties of Near Field Communication is nearness, but this is set against one of the paradoxes of touch-based interaction where, in fact, nothing needs to touch. In a very short film made with BERG, we explore nearness in interactive technologies.

    Laser Cave Prototype
    Interactive Audio Visual installation for Mekanism’s “After School Special” art show. Location: gray area foundation for the arts. Audio : suryummy, herbie hancock, various manipulated retro logos.

    Disturb Me Installation
    “Disturb Me” is an interactive installation between human and his environment. It is to make perceptible the reciprocal links and often forgotten contact, that we maintain with our environment.

    You Fade to Light
    Concept by rAndom International for Philips Lumiblade. Software developed by Chris O’Shea.

    Tips for Coding and Designing Usable Web Forms

    The web form has been one of the most discussed elements in web design for more than ten years now. We can’t help it. Call-to-action functionality often leads users to a form; purchases are made using forms; users register or subscribe using forms — the uses for forms are endless.

    While it is fairly easy to slap together a form in HTML, it’s not as easy to code, style, and design your form in a manner that makes it usable and accessible to the majority of users. Since forms play such a large role in website conversions and success rates, the tips below, as well as the resources provided at the end of this article, should prove valuable for developers creating and coding web forms.

    Two-Column vs. One

    This decision will generally depend on the content of the form, but it’s often preferable to avoid a two-column layout if the form is fairly simple.

    Below is a good example of a simple form that places each label above its related form element.

    Simple in Tips for Coding and Designing Usable Web Forms

    What are the benefits to this type of form layout, as opposed to a two-column form? First, the form labels have plenty of space to allow for future changes to the text inside them. A two-column form could be limited in this regard, and might require the entire form to be restructured if changes are made. Another benefit is that the form is not as cluttered looking, having plenty of whitespace in the label areas, so it’s easy to read and easy to associate the labels with the fields. Additionally, the background color given to each label/field pairing makes the form more visually inviting.

    By contrast, look at the two-column form below:

    Two-col in Tips for Coding and Designing Usable Web Forms

    Especially because of the left-aligned text and lack of color, this form doesn’t have the same clean, visual effect as the previous example. In fact, the vertical space between the labels and the fields is somewhat distracting, giving the sense of multiple entities, when in fact a simple form like this should visually be presented as one grouped entity.

    It’s not impossible, however to achieve a clean, organized look with a two-column layout, as shown by the example below from Chapters Indigo Books:

    So, although there are no definite rules for the general layout of your form, effective guidelines include avoiding a two-column layout for simple forms, and aligning the text labels right if a two-column layout is used.

    Use Inline Form Validation

    Recently Luke Wroblewski wrote about the effectiveness of inline form validation on A List Apart. To quote directly from that article:

    Our participants were faster, more successful, less error-prone, and more satisfied when they used the forms with inline validation.

    jQuery Inline Form Validation, Because Validation is a Mess is a step-by-step tutorial describing how to use jQuery to add inline validation to a lengthy form.

    Really Easy Field Validation

    Dexagogo provides a simple script that can be used to add inline validation to your forms. The demo example is not the prettiest, but of course it can be customized to suit your needs. The script uses Scriptaculous for the fade-in effect.

    Group Related Fields

    With a lengthy form, you’ll be limited as to what you can do to improve its usability, but grouping related fields together to divide the form into manageable visual components will make the form a little less intimidating. Thus, the form will be perceived to be easier to fill out, even though it will probably take about the same amount of time as a form that has no grouping of fields.

    To group related fields, use <fieldset> and the optional <legend> element, as shown in the code below:

    <form id="form" action="register.php" method="post">

    	<fieldset>
    		<legend>Basic Info</legend>
    		<div>
    		<label for="name">Name:</label>
    		<input type="text" name="name" id="name" />
    		</div>
    		<label for="password">Password:</label>
    		<input type="text" name="password" id="password" />
    		<div>
    		<label for="password-confirm">Confirm Password:</label>
    		<input type="text" name="password-confirm" id="password-confirm" />
    		</div>
    	</fieldset>

    	<fieldset>
    		<legend>Address</legend>
    		<label for="address">Address:</label>
    		<input type="text" name="address" id="address" />

    		<label for="address2">Address (cont'd):</label>
    		<input type="text" name="address2" id="address2" />

    		<label for="zip">Zip/Postal:</label>
    		<input type="text" name="zip" id="zip" />

    		<label for="city">City:</label>
    		<input type="text" name="city" id="city" />

    		<label for="country">Country:</label>
    		<input type="text" name="country" id="country" />

    	</fieldset>

    </form>

    The <fieldset> element by default has a border, which can be changed, and is often removed in a CSS reset. Below is an example of a single form that is divided into two sections using <fieldset> and <legend> elements:

    Cosmicsoda Registration Form

    Fieldsets in Tips for Coding and Designing Usable Web Forms

    Unfortunately, the display of the border on the <fieldset> is not the same across all browsers, so it is usually best to disable the border in your stylesheet and create a custom border by some other means. This will also affect the look of the <legend> element, so it’s rare to see the use of these two elements nowadays. But the <fieldset> can still be used to group elements, and custom borders and headings can be included to provide the same basic effect. The <fieldset> and <legend> elements also have the added benefit of contributing to a form’s accessibility.

    Clearly Indicate Required Fields

    It’s common to indicate required fields by means of the asterisk symbol (*) in a different color than the rest of the text, so the required indicator stands out. Although most sites nowadays include this indicator, some still fail to use it properly.

    The explanatory text that describes the purpose of the asterisk should be placed immediately above the form that is to be filled out, so the users see it before they begin filling it out. Some sites have used the asterisk character somewhat like a footnote indicator, placing the description of the asterisk below the form. The example below from the Elderluxe contact page demonstrates this poor placement of the the text that explains the meaning of the asterisk:

    Elderluxe Contact Form

    Required in Tips for Coding and Designing Usable Web Forms

    The example above has two problems: the asterisks are the same color as the rest of the text, and the explanation of the asterisk is near the bottom of the form. In many instances, asterisks alone would be enough, without any explanation, but if your target audience is not as computer-savvy, you will likely want to include at the top of the form a brief description of what the asterisk means.

    The example below from Office Depot’s registration page demonstrates a properly-placed asterisk description:

    Office Depot Registration Form

    Required-good in Tips for Coding and Designing Usable Web Forms

    Although the example form above does have problems (left aligned text, small type, little use of whitespace), it clearly indicates required fields and explains the meaning of the asterisk before the user begins filling it out. This is especially important in this example, since the first three fields are not required, thus the user can safely skip them.

    Fancier Checkboxes, Radio Buttons, and Select Elements

    Forms can look awfully dull, especially since the styling of <select> elements, checkboxes, and radio buttons is limited in most browsers, and it is impossible to use CSS alone to style those elements to look exactly the same in every browser. Fortunately, there are a number of JavaScript library plugins and code that allow developers to include fancier, cross-browser form elements that degrade gracefully.

    jQuery Checkbox allows you to insert custom checkboxes and radio buttons into your forms. I don’t particularly care for the look of the radio buttons in this case (they look nothing like radio buttons), but it’s one option to consider.

    jQuery Image Combobox is a fully skinnable image-based replacement for the browser’s usually-ugly <select> element.

    Giva Labs mcDropdown jQuery Plug-in is an intuitive, keyboard-accessible, easy-to-implement replacement for a typical <select> element that allows for nested data.

    Display a Hint When a Field Gets Focus

    Complex forms with many different fields can be easier for the user to fill out if some help text is given. Of course, you don’t want to overwhelm the user with one or more paragraphs of text above the form explaining what the fields are for.

    As a simple alternative, you can write some JavaScript (or use a customizable plugin) that will display a custom tooltip-style message to explain form elements that might be confusing, or that require a certain type of input (for example, a username that only allows letters or numbers and must have at least 6 characters).

    jQuery Input Floating Hint Box is a simple plugin that displays a fully-customizable floating hint when a field gets focus.

    DHTML Goodies Form Field Tooltip is another variation of the form field helper text that displays the helper text based on what is entered in the form field’s title attribute.

    Hint-2 in Tips for Coding and Designing Usable Web Forms

    Be Generous with Whitespace

    As mentioned earlier, forms can look ugly and cluttered if the elements in the form are not displayed in a clean, usable manner. We generally think of the use of whitespace in our overall site design, but the same principle can be applied within a form, even down to the smallest details.

    You can improve a form’s design by adding appropriate amounts of space around field elements, giving the elements themselves a larger and more usable size, and also allowing plenty of space inside text fields by using padding in your CSS. For example, try typing some text into the two fields below.

    With just a small difference in size and padding, the second input field has a more usable feel. When multiple text fields appear in the same form, this can make quite a difference in how the overall experience is perceived, even though technically it might not make a whole lot of difference as far as how long it takes the user to fill it out.

    It also helps to allow text fields to have plenty of visible characters. A name field especially should have plenty of space to allow for longer names. Overflow of characters will start pushing the text out of view, so it’s best to have enough space to accommodate longer names so that the user can more easily spot mistakes. The example field below demonstrates how a longer name would be cut off.

    A text field that is similar in size to the ones in the previous example would be more appropriate and would allow for longer input to be entered without the risk of cutting anything off. The same principle would apply to a search box that may potentially receive long queries as input.

    Make Your Forms Accessible

    The topic of accessible forms could easily encompass an entire article and much more, but here are just a few tips to ensure your forms are more accessible and usable to a diverse audience.

    • Use the title attribute for inputs, to assist those using screen readers
    • If a label doesn’t wrap around the field it is associated with, use a for attribute that matches the accompanying field’s id
    • Set a tab order using the tabindex attribute on each element
    • For the tab order, increment the tab numbers by large amounts (e.g. “10, 20, 30…” instead of “1, 2, 3…”), to allow for later additions that don’t require rewriting all the tab indexes
    • For radio buttons and checkboxes, put the label after the associated element so screen readers read the item first and the word “checkbox” or “radio button” second
    • Use the <optgroup> tag to group <select> items
    • Use the accesskey attribute on form elements, to allow keyboard access

The truth is, photographing animals (especially in wildlife) is very involved, such a moment could only be told through some timely amazing shots. For someone who loves animals, photographing them can be both very fulfilling and frustrating at the same time. Excellent animal photography requires experience, knowledge and patience.

    Animals can make very eye catching subjects to photograph in wild. Taking wildlife photography in a place where the animals don’t fear humans makes your task a bit difficult. In their natural environment, animals often provide many opportunities for taking dramatic shots. Let’s now take a look at some of these dramatic images of animal photography to see emotions in the wild nature.
